We’re a Woven Tapestry
When we think about our legacy and where our elevated brand began, we go back to our 2022 annual report—Woven. That’s when we introduced a simple but powerful idea: every person at our institution is a thread. On its own, a single thread is delicate. But woven together? That’s where the strength comes in.
Our brand is inspired by the fabric of culture, community and life itself. Each new thread (each individual) adds depth and resilience. Together, they form a tapestry that reflects who we are: community‑focused, resilient and deeply committed to service.
Fast‑forward to our 2023 Year in Review, where we gave that woven idea a refresh. Same spirit, just a more modern aesthetic. When our tapestry is viewed at a granular level, one portion becomes the focus. The refined weave pattern, now a series of vividly colored geometric squares, signifies our taking a closer look at one of Morehouse School of Medicine’s innovations.
Those squares weren’t chosen by accident. Universally, a square symbolizes stability, strong foundations and trust. For us, it represents our four pillars: Education, Research, Clinical Excellence and Community Engagement. Positioned in an ascending, left‑to‑right orientation, these squares evoke momentum and progress, guiding the viewer’s gaze with energy.
When I joined Morehouse School of Medicine, our visual identity was swimming in a sea of blue. Calm? Yes. Reserved? Sure. But it leaned a bit too institutional and didn’t fully capture our humanity. So we expanded the palette, infusing it with energy and a true celebration of the communities we serve.
As our brand continued to evolve, we introduced a custom system of geometric patterns (one pattern for each of our 4 pillars) rooted, of course, in the square. It became our touchstone, representing balance, structure and the interconnected nature of our mission. More importantly, it reflects our commitment to meeting communities where they are and serving them how they need.
These pillar patterns draw inspiration from global textile traditions and storytelling—like West African Kente cloth, Japanese Shashiko stitching and traditional Choctaw fabrics. Each reference was chosen with intention, reinforcing our commitment to cultural relevance and global health equity. Every pattern tells our story about how diverse perspectives and disciplines come together to serve the greater good.
Today, the patterns serve as signature brand elements designed to unify our communications across all four pillars. Whether in print, digital or environmental spaces, they bring cohesion while honoring the cultural narratives that shape our purpose. At the heart of it all is a simple truth: every member of the Morehouse School of Medicine community is a thread. And when woven together with intention and shared values, we create something powerful—a tapestry of impact, innovation and service.
