SCAD SERVE empowers Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) students, faculty and staff to make meaningful contributions through intentional initiatives that improve quality of life for our communities. As Associate Dean of Academics and Senior Executive Director of Design for Good, I developed SCAD’s inaugural multidisciplinary studio Design for Good course offering. Under the supervision of SCAD faculty and alumni mentors, students from all SCAD disciplines generate and apply design solutions and services that aim to advance social, community and environmental good for selected nonprofit organizations who have a particular challenge that they cannot effectively solve themselves. This 10-week studio course incorporates design, business concepts, social entrepreneurship and community collaborations to address essential human needs.

SCAD SERVE concentrates SCAD’s considerable design-for-good actions with purpose and intention. Students engaged in Design for Good courses exemplify verve, design expertise and academic prowess via incredibly meaningful solutions that improve quality of life. The impactful outcomes of the Design for Good courses are notable examples of SCAD’s community-focused design-for-good philosophy in action.

SCAD SERVE aligned with Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn Works, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, revitalizing and promoting the commercial and cultural legacy of the Sweet Auburn Historic District on the inaugural Design for Good course offering. The featured Design for Good course example, Shealo Glo, is a community entrepreneur and client of Sweet Auburn Works.

Design for Good Course Client — Shealo Glo

Shannon Mitchell of organic skincare company Shealo Glo worked with Design for Good students during our 10-week winter 2022 academic quarter. The process focused on enhancing the Shealo Glo story through a refined purpose, vision, mission, narrative, communication strategy and branding.

Women overextend themselves in an effort to take care of everyone around them. While doing so, they often neglect their own self-care. Shealo Glo desires to be a safe place for conversations around health and a catalyst for the self-care discussion amongst families globally for generations. You are amazing! Shealo Glo understands carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders can lead to sacrificing your mental and physical health. Shealo Glo supports your prioritizing self-care and empowers you to put YOU first! Self-care is your next good habit!

Shannon Mitchell — ShealoGlo Founder

The Design for Good team’s ability to hear what we said about our brand, mission, and target audience beautifully translated into the elevated experience we’ve been looking for! From the new logo and typography to the custom-made items for our modular retail display, SCAD students hit the nail right on the head! I can’t thank them enough!
